In the centre of Ellis Crossing town square, Mayor Moore stood atop a stage, behind a podium of polished mahogany. He looked every bit the pillar of the community: waistcoat pressed, hair slicked back, his voice booming with a practised, rhythmic authority that commanded the attention of the three hundred souls gathered before him.

“…and so, as we embark upon a new season,” Moore proclaimed, his hand sweeping grandly toward the darkening sky, “we must remember that the strength of our town lies not in festivities, but in our character. We must guard against the creeping shadows of impropriety. Let us hold fast to the virtues of modesty…”

Twenty feet behind the heavy velvet curtain of the main stage, hidden within the dense, unruly embrace of the ornamental hydrangeas, Ariel was about to vibrate right out of her skin.

“Dad,” she whispered anxiously to herself. “Everyone knows this one already.” The hoodie she’d thrown on to ward off the evening damp felt suddenly, oppressively hot. Her first year at Aurora Wesleyan U had left her ill-prepared for a Great Lakes summer.

“Then stop listening to him,” a low, melodic voice commanded.

A hand, warm and startlingly firm, slid around Ariel’s waist, pulling her backward into the deeper shadows of the shrubbery. Ariel let out a small gasp, her breath hitching as she was pressed against a solid, feminine warmth.

Renée was only a year older, but in the dim, filtered light of the fête lanterns, she looked effortlessly confident. She smelled of vanilla and something sharper, almost electric. Her fingers, long and steady, didn’t tremble like Ariel’s. They moved with the precision of someone who always knew what she was doing. At the moment, she’d found the zipper pull.

Ariel felt her face flush as she turned in the older woman’s embrace. “What if someone walks behind the stage? If my mother—”

“Your mother’s discussing the importance of civic duty with the deacon.” Renée’s lips brushed Ariel’s earlobe. She shivered despite the heat, but Renée pressed closer against Ariel’s trembling frame. “And your father is sanctifying the air with his ego. Nobody’s looking at the bushes.”

Renée’s hand travelled upward, her fingers tracing the underside of Ariel’s jaw, tilting her head back. It was a gentle command: look at me. Ariel obeyed.

“You’re shaking,” Renée noted, her voice dropping an octave, sending a chill over Ariel’s skin. She reached down, her hand sliding beneath the hem of Ariel’s skirt, her fingers finding the sensitive, pale skin of her thigh. “Is it the speech?”

Ariel’s throat had gone dry, her heart thudded so hard she was sure her father would hear it over his own booming rhetoric. The sensation of Renée’s palm—steady, warm, and utterly certain—made Ariel’s knees feel untrustworthy.

“I…I don’t know,” she stammered, a tiny, pathetic denial that died the moment Renée’s thumb traced a slow, deliberate circle on the inside of her leg.

“Liar,” Renée purred, a wicked smirk appearing on her lips.

“…for a town without discipline is a town without a future! Let us embrace the joy of temperance!” The Mayor’s voice soared with moral certainty.

Renée’s fingers quested higher, brushing against the lace trim of Ariel’s underwear, and Ariel let out a shrill aaah! that was swallowed by the first, distant thud of an early firework echoing from the hills on the far side of the lake. “There,” Renée murmured as her thumb pressed firmly against the centre of Ariel’s heat through the thin cotton. “The show’s starting. How about we explore your virtue?”

The sky over the town began to bloom, a rhythmic thud-thud-thud signalling the start of the pyrotechnics. Every burst of colour cast erratic, dancing shadows across the two women. Ariel somehow found herself lying on her back on the cool, yielding mulch, looking anxiously up at Renée.

“Please…someone’s going to—” Ariel’s protest ended with a gasp. Renée’s fingernails pressed lightly into the inside of Ariel’s thigh.

“It’s just us,” she responded, then shifted, moving her weight off Ariel slightly. She hooked her fingers into the waistband of Ariel’s panties and pulled them down. Ariel was filled with a brand new mix of excitement and terror even as she brought her knees up to assist Renée in removing them. The older woman dangled the undies from her fingertip over Ariel’s face. “So pretty,” Renée murmured, then stuffed them in the pocket of her oversized bomber jacket.

“Now, Ariel.” Renée’s voice was a low, commanding hum. “Every time there’s a bang, I want you to give me a sound. Understand?”

Ariel went cold, but in her core was an aching need. “Wh-wh-I can’t!”

“You will,” Renée countered. She moved with a feline grace, straddling Ariel’s hips and bunching her skirt up, fully exposing Ariel’s messy whorls of pubic hair. The authority in Renée’s gaze was absolute. “Stay still. Let me show you how to take it.”

BOOM! A golden chrysanthemum burst in the sky, illuminating the scene in a brilliant flash.

Renée leaned forward, her hair falling like a curtain around Ariel’s face, and kissed the hollow of Ariel’s throat. “Mmmph…Renée…” Ariel whimpered, raising her chin and pressing her head back against the dirt.

“Listen to the sky,” Renée commanded.

CRACK-BOOM

Red and blue sparks rained over the crowd. The Mayor’s voice drifted toward them, thin and distant. “We will remain steadfast in our discipline!”

In the bushes, the discipline was unravelling as Renée’s hand moved. She found Ariel’s clitoris, her thumb applying a firm, steady pressure that made Ariel’s hips jerk upward in a desperate, seeking motion.

“That’s it,” Renée murmured, her voice a soothing, dominant balm. “Don’t fight. Just ride it.”

POP-POP-POP

Sharp, rapid bursts of light. Renée increased the pace. Her fingers slid in and out of Ariel’s pussy, making a soft, squelching sound that seemed to sync exactly with the staccato bursts of light above. Ariel’s breath was coming in shallow gasps—“ha-ha-hauah”—her eyes rolling back.

“You’re doing perfect,” Renée’s voice hitched on the whisper. “You’re being such a good girl for me. Such a loud, beautiful girl.”

The praise hit Ariel with stunning force. A deep, submissive thrill flooded her. She was being guided. She stopped trying to control herself. She let her mouth hang open, a needy moan escaping her every time Renée’s thumb applied that delicious, crushing pressure.

“Look at me. Tell me what you want.”

Ariel tried to look at Renée, but her eyes wouldn’t focus. “More? Please. More!”

Renée chuckled. She slipped a second finger inside Ariel’s cunt and began driving deeper, her movements becoming more urgent, more purposeful.

WHUMP

The Mayor was shouting something about “the sanctity of the home,” but his words were nothing more than white noise against the wet, slapping sound of flesh on flesh and the frantic panting of two women lost in the dark.

“Almost there, Ariel! Don’t you dare hold back!” Renée had added a third finger, Ariel was sure, but she didn’t know when; all she knew was how Renée was everywhere. Inside her. Against her clit. Biting her neck and suckling loudly.

Ariel’s voice broke into a high, spiralling cry she didn’t recognise as her own, lost in the cacophony of the fireworks. Her hips were bucking uncontrollably as a violent, bone-shaking orgasm ripped through her. Renée shuddered hard against her, a strangled sound against the curve of Ariel’s neck, then eased her down and settled on top of her, weight pressing Ariel into the pillowy-soft mulch.

The sky continued to glitter, but the world had gone silent. The only sounds left were the ragged, syncopated gasps of two women, and the distant, fading echoes of a town that had no idea how much sin was being committed in its very shadows.

The thunder of the finale faded, leaving a heavy, ringing silence in its wake. The smoke drifted lazily over the town square, a ghostly shroud settling over the crowd as the cheers for the display began to swell. Mayor Moore wore a satisfied smile, looking every bit the triumphant guardian of morality.

A few yards away from the stage, within the dappled shade of an ancient elm and partially screened by a wall of hydrangeas, two figures sat on a stone bench. Neatly composed, they were the very image of small-town grace.

Ethel McCormack carefully smoothed the front of her silk blouse. She took a contemplative sip of her iced tea, her eyes fixed on the shrubbery where she could hear soft, rhythmic, feminine breathing.

Then, a muffled, breathless laugh drifted from the bushes—a sound of utter relief.

The ghost of a satisfied smile crossed Vi Moore’s lips—the look of a director watching a well-rehearsed play reach its successful conclusion. She reached into her small clutch and pulled out a single sugar packet, extending it toward Ethel.

Ethel accepted it, her fingers brushing Vi’s in the moonlight—a familiar, unhurried touch. They shared a quiet exhale, a breath of recognition. As the lights dimmed onstage, they rose in unison, smoothing their skirts, and turned back toward the light of the square, walking side-by-side like any other pillars of the community.
